Bike Safety Guide

Important Safety Notice: Parents are ultimately responsible for ensuring their child's bicycle is safe and properly maintained for the triathlon. If you're unsure about any aspect of your child's bike safety or identify an issue, we strongly encourage you to visit one of our local bike shops. Their experienced staff will be happy to inspect the bicycle and address any concerns.

Pre-Race Bike Safety Checklist

  • Tire Check: Ensure tires are properly inflated (squeeze them - they should feel firm). Look for the recommended PSI on the tire wall.

  • Brake Test: Squeeze both brake levers - they should not touch the handlebar. Brakes should respond immediately and stop the wheels effectively.

  • Chain Condition: Chain should be clean and properly lubricated. It should move smoothly without squeaking or grinding.

  • Wheel Security: Wheels should be firmly attached and not wobble when spun. Quick-release levers (if present) should be tight and properly closed. Kickstands removed/zip tied.

  • Handlebar Check: Handlebars should be tight and aligned properly with the front wheel. No wobbling or looseness when pushed.

  • Seat Security: Seat should be at appropriate height and firmly tightened. It shouldn't move when pushed.

  • General Inspection: Check for any loose, broken, or cracked parts. Listen for unusual noises while riding.

  • Helmet: Helmets are mandatory.
